Four women were killed in a tiger attack in the Gunjewahi forest range of Sindewahi tehsil in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district on the morning of May 22, 2026.
The women had entered the forest to collect tendu leaves, which provide seasonal income to many families in the area. The incident took place in compartment number 1836 of the forest range.
The victims were identified as Kavdubai Dadaji Mohurle (45), Anubai Dadaji Mohurle (46), Sangita Santosh Chaudhary (36), and Sunita Kaushik Mohurle (33).
According to officials, a group of local women was collecting tendu leaves when a tiger suddenly appeared and attacked them. Three women managed to escape from the forest and informed villagers and authorities, but four others died in the attack.
The incident created fear and anger among villagers, many of whom depend on forest produce for their livelihood.
Forest Department and police officials reached the spot soon after receiving information. Authorities announced an initial financial assistance of ₹25,000 for each affected family.
Rapid Response Teams and forest officials have started search operations to trace the tiger. Camera traps and cages have been placed in the area. The Forest Department has also increased patrolling and advised villagers not to enter dense forest areas alone during the tendu leaf collection season.
