Sunkari Venugopal Retires After Four Decades of Service
NIT Warangal:
Sunkari Venugopal, who began his career as a daily-wage worker at the Regional Engineering College (REC, now NIT Warangal), has retired after nearly four decades of service. Starting in 1985 as a work inspector, he steadily rose through the ranks to become a Technical Assistant, playing a key role in the construction and maintenance of several buildings and facilities on campus.
Venugopal was not only known for his technical skills but also for his leadership among employees. From his early years, he worked with senior leaders to fight for the rights of daily-wage staff. His efforts contributed to securing permanent employment for such workers at REC, a development that later inspired other NITs across the country.
As the founder and president of the Technical Employees Welfare Association, he led campaigns against pay disparities and working condition issues, often through protests and strikes. His work ensured fair recognition for technical staff at NIT Warangal.
Beyond employee issues, Venugopal also founded the OBC Association on campus, addressing the concerns of backward classes, SCs, and STs. Under his leadership, the association organized awareness programs inspired by Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule, focusing on equality and dignity. He continues to serve as the president of the Telangana Munnuru Kapu District Employees Association.
Born on September 15, 1965, in Abbapur village, Mulugu district, Venugopal studied locally up to Intermediate before completing ITI. While working at REC, he pursued further education, earning a Diploma in Civil Engineering from Warangal Night Polytechnic and a B.A. degree from Arts College.
At his farewell, colleagues recalled how they always addressed him as “Anna” (elder brother), reflecting his reputation as a person who stood by his co-workers. On the occasion, he also presented gifts to junior staff.
Looking ahead, Venugopal says he plans to continue his involvement in social causes, strengthen the BC movement, and contribute to the development of his native village.
