New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh gangster Vikas Dubey, accused of killing eight policemen last week, was arrested on Thursday morning from a temple in Madhya Pradesh after a five-day chase across four states. Upon arrest, the notorious criminal, in dramatic fashion, yelled “main Vikas Dubey Hoon, Kanpur wala”, promoting the policeman standing behind him to thwack him on the head, while other policemen around him were seen guarding him. The criminal, who has 60 criminal cases against him, has been on the run since last Friday after allegedly killing eight policemen in an ambush who had gone to arrest him. He was finally arrested in Madhya Pradesh.

The security guard of the Mahakaal Temple, who called up the police which resulted in the arrest of notorious history sheeter Vikas Dubey from Ujjain on Thursday (July 9, 2020) morning, said that he had seen photos of Dubey and so he knew what the latter looked like.
The guard, Lakhan Yadav, said that he came to the temple at 7 am and saw the gangster trying to enter the temple through the back gate. Yadav found Dubey's activity suspicious and informed the police. Dubey could not enter the temple even though he had purchased a VIP darshan ticket.

Vikas Dubey was arrested outside a temple in the pilgrimage city of Ujjain on Thursday after purchasing prasad and an entry ticket to the shrine. However, temple sources, according to PTI, say Dubey reached the temple gate in the morning and purchased a Rs 250 ticket from a counter near the police post. When he went to a nearby shop to buy prasad for the deity, the shop owner identified him and alerted police. Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra said two of Dubey’s associates were also arrested,Hindustan Times reports.
According to the police, Dubey drove to Ujjain from Kota in Rajasthan after he was spotted in Faridabad, Haryana.
He was in his own car with two associates and could pass off as an ordinary visitor in a white t-shirt and mask.

How Vikas Dubey, after evading cops for five days, managed to travel from Haryana to Rajasthan to Madhya Pradesh is among the questions being raised about the arrest.
Dubey’s mother Sarla Devi said that her son is with the Samajwadi Party, a claim denied by the party. On being asked what should be done by the government after her son’s arrest, Sarla Devi said, “The government should do whatever it feels appropriate (sarkar jo uchit samjhe, woh kare).”“At this time, he is not in the BJP, he is with the SP,” she told reporters.
"After the heinous murders in Kanpur, the promptness with which the Uttar government should have acted, proved to be a total failure. Despite the alert, he reached Ujjain which shows the laxity in the security apparatus and also hints at the connivance,’’ Priynk said in a series of tweets in Hindi.
She further tweeted, "The ‘no action’ on a three-month-old letter and the name of Vikas not being in the list of notorious criminals suggests that the connections are far-reaching. The UP government should conduct a CBI inquiry into the matter and reveal all the facts and the protection-connections."

"We could not arrest Vikas Dubey and he surrendered in Ujjain. We could not arrest him even after such a huge incident and he kept travelling around. This should be investigated," tweeted Amitabh Thakur, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer posted in Uttar Pradesh.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also raised questions about whether it was an arrest or surrender. "We hear that the main accused of the Kanpur-Kand is now in police custody. If true, then the government should clarify whether this was a surrender or arrest. Also his call records should be made public so the nexus can be exposed," the former UP Chief Minister tweeted.
