Congress Takes Stand: The Congress Party asserts that the Ayodhya temple inauguration is a BJP-RSS political event and declines to participate.

Accusations of Political Exploitation: Congress and other opposition parties accuse the BJP of politicizing the religious event for electoral gains, creating a Catch-22 situation.

New Delhi, January 10, 2024: In a significant development, the Congress Party declared on Wednesday that it would abstain from attending the inauguration ceremony of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya scheduled for January 22. Terming the grand temple event as a BJP-RSS political affair, the party asserted that religion should remain a personal matter, but the RSS and the BJP have transformed the Ayodhya temple into a political project.

In an official statement, the grand old party accused the leaders of the BJP and RSS of hastening the incomplete temple's inauguration for electoral gains. "While abiding by the 2019 Supreme Court judgment and honoring the sentiments of millions who revere Lord Ram, Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury have respectfully declined the invitation to what is clearly an RSS/BJP event,"

Numerous Congress leaders have accused the BJP of exploiting the religious event to gain political mileage and take credit for the Ram Temple's inauguration. As the BJP intensifies efforts to make the ceremony a memorable event, most opposition parties find themselves in a dilemma, torn between attending and risking being labeled anti-Sanatan or abstaining and potentially playing into the BJP's hands as the Lok Sabha elections loom in the coming months.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) has already declared its decision not to participate, echoing accusations of the BJP politicizing a sacred occasion. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee went a step further, accusing the BJP of using the Mandir inauguration as a pre-election gimmick.
