Demand to Merge Hanumakonda with Warangal for Unified City Development
Civil society leaders and intellectuals urge government to strengthen Warangal as a major urban center
Leaders of civil society groups and intellectuals have urged the state government to merge Hanumakonda district with Warangal district and develop Warangal into a major city in Telangana.
The demand was raised at a meeting held at the Press Club in Hanumakonda under the chairmanship of Professor Kurapati Venkata Narayana, State Chairman of the Telangana Movement Forum. Participants discussed the need to unify the districts for better urban planning and development.
Speakers said that development in Telangana has largely been concentrated in Hyderabad over the past several decades, while other regions have not progressed at the same pace. They expressed concern that expectations of balanced development after the formation of Telangana have not been fully met.
They alleged that past decisions led to the division of Warangal city, which affected its growth. According to them, the current government has also not taken sufficient steps toward merging the districts or strengthening Warangal’s development.
Forum for Better Warangal Chairman Konduru Sudhakar, citing government data, said that newly formed districts in the erstwhile Warangal region are lagging behind others in the state, with Hanumakonda ranking low in development indicators.
Former Warangal Mayor and ex-MLA Dr. T. Rajeshwara Rao said that earlier proposals to unify the districts did not move forward due to political opposition. He urged the government to consider the historical importance of Warangal and act on the long-standing demand.
Other speakers called for improved infrastructure, including inner and outer ring roads and better connectivity, to support industrial and urban growth. They also stressed the need for coordination among public representatives to push for the city’s development.
Those who participated in the meeting included Prof. Vadde Ravinder, Senior journalist Dasari Krushna Reddy,T. Srinivas, Dr. Vijayalakshmi, V.
