Highlights Urgent Need to Protect and Revitalize Urban Lake

Attended by senior officials, experts, and stakeholders, the event delved into innovative strategies to ensure the sustainability of these invaluable resources

In a bid to tackle the pressing issue of urban lake degradation, a workshop convened today shed light on the crucial significance of preserving and rejuvenating these water bodies. Attended by a diverse array of participants including senior officials, experts, and representatives from NGOs and startups dedicated to water conservation, the event provided a platform for discussion and innovation.

Addressing the workshop, Principal Secretary of Municipal Administration and Urban Development, Danakishore, reiterated the government's firm commitment to lake conservation, particularly in urban areas. He emphasized the formation of Lake Protection Committees aimed at safeguarding and enhancing the quality of lakes and their surroundings in the Hyderabad Metropolitan Region. Recognizing the multifaceted benefits of healthy lakes, Danakishore stressed their pivotal role in bolstering environmental health, enhancing quality of life, and driving economic prosperity.
Highlighting the scale of the challenge, Danakishore revealed that there are over 4234 lakes in urban areas across the state. Rapid urbanization has led to widespread contamination and encroachment, underscoring the urgent need for lake restoration efforts to maintain ecological balance and secure the state's water resources.

Moreover, Danakishore elaborated on various governmental initiatives and directives aimed at lake protection and rejuvenation. Through the implementation of these measures, the state endeavors to achieve sustainable water management, promote biodiversity, and improve living standards for its residents. He emphasized the adoption of creative and sustainable solutions, ranging from wastewater treatment enhancement to community engagement initiatives, as key pillars in this endeavor.

Adding to the discourse, GHMC Commissioner Ronald Ross emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach to lake protection and rejuvenation, emphasizing the active involvement of local communities. Similarly, MD HMWSB Sudharshan Reddy underscored the need for heightened citizen engagement, lamenting the prevailing neglect of urban lakes due to a lack of civic ownership.
In her remarks, CDMA Divya emphasized the intrinsic value of lakes as vital ecosystems supporting biodiversity, groundwater recharge, and climate regulation. Expressing concern over the adverse impacts of urbanization, pollution, and neglect on lake health, she called for a holistic approach integrating scientific knowledge, technological innovation, and community participation to achieve sustainable urban development.

The workshop also featured contributions from Special Secretary I&CAD Prashant Jeevan Patil, Director EVDM GHMC Prakash Reddy, and other officials, who shared case studies, best practices, and technical insights on lake protection and rejuvenation from across India. Discussions centered on citizen involvement, innovative technologies, and holistic strategies to address the complex challenges facing urban water bodies.
