Telangana Government Increases Retirement Age for University Teachers to 65
Hyderabad, January 28, 2025: The Telangana government has announced an increase in the retirement age for regular university teachers from 60 to 65 years. The decision applies to those working under the Higher Education Department and drawing UGC scale of pay in state universities.
According to an order issued by the Higher Education (UE) Department, the decision was made following recommendations from the Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE). The council highlighted a shortage of university teachers due to retirements and the lack of fresh recruitment since 2013. The extension aims to retain experienced faculty and maintain academic standards in teaching and research.
The council also pointed out that retaining senior faculty would help universities in maintaining NAAC, NBA, NRIF, and other national and international accreditations. The move aligns with UGC Regulations 2018 and a previous Telangana government order (G.O.Ms.No.15, Dt.29.06.2019) that implemented UGC Revised Pay Scales 2016 for teaching staff.
The government reviewed the matter and approved the retirement age enhancement, ensuring it applies only to faculty members drawing UGC pay scales in state universities. The registrars of all universities have been directed to implement the decision.
The order was issued in the name of the Governor of Telangana by Dr. Yogita Rana, Secretary to Government.
