Warangal, May 5:
Veerlapati Ramaiah, senior faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) at Kakatiya Institute of Technology and Science Warangal, has been awarded a Ph.D. by Vel Tech Rangarajan Dr. Sagunthala R&D Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai.
KITS Principal Prof. K. Ashoka Reddy said Ramaiah has over 32 years of teaching and research experience. He submitted his doctoral thesis titled “Performance Assessment of Indian Electricity Distribution Utilities Using DEA–Malmquist Index.” His research was guided by Dr. P. Chandrasekar, Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Vel Tech.
The study focuses on evaluating the efficiency and productivity of electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs) in India using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) methods.
Key findings show that many power distribution utilities are operating below optimal efficiency levels. The study identified high input use and significant Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses. While there has been some improvement in operations, technological progress has slowed, leading to a decline in overall productivity. The research also points to regional differences in the implementation of reforms.
Recommendations from the study include a phased digital transformation using AI tools. The approach suggests starting with smart metering, followed by loss detection systems and improved procurement, and later moving to real-time grid management. The study notes that without such steps, the gap between cost and revenue (ACS-ARR gap) may widen, affecting financial stability.
The research also highlights its relevance to society by supporting reliable electricity supply, reducing financial losses, and improving service quality. It aligns with India’s climate commitments under COP26 and long-term development goals.
KITS Chairman Capt. V. Lakshmikantha Rao, Treasurer P. Narayana Reddy, management members, and former MLA Vodithala Satish Kumar, along with Principal Prof. K. Ashoka Reddy, congratulated Ramaiah for his contribution to energy policy research.
Registrar Prof. M. Komal Reddy, Administrative Officer Prof. P. Ramesh Reddy, Prof. Dr. BLN Raju of NIT Warangal, members of the Academic Council, department heads, faculty, and staff also extended their congratulations.
