Warangal:

Lawyers from Warangal and Hanamkonda districts staged a protest in front of the main gate of the Warangal court on Friday, demanding the resignation of Bar Council of India (BCI) Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra.

The protest was organised as part of the nationwide agitation being conducted under the leadership of the All India Lawyers Union (AILU). Representatives of the Indian Legal Professionals Association (ILPA), Indian Association of Lawyers (IAL) and Congress Legal Cell also participated.

Speaking at the protest, AILU state treasurer Ennamsetti Venugopal Rao alleged that the BCI chairman’s actions had affected the credibility and functioning of the statutory body. He demanded that Manan Kumar Mishra resign from the post and that the BCI function in accordance with the Advocates Act, 1961.

He also alleged that unilateral decisions taken by the chairman had affected the interests and protection of lawyers. Referring to the recent controversy involving students of NALSAR University, he said the BCI chairman should take responsibility and step down from the post.

ILPA state vice-president Teegala Jeevan Goud and state general secretary Sayini Narender alleged that the BCI should function independently and represent lawyers with different political views. They criticised what they described as political statements and decisions made by the BCI leadership.

They said the BCI is a statutory body established under the Advocates Act, 1961, and should work within its legal responsibilities and protect the interests of lawyers. They called for the nationwide agitation to continue until the BCI chairman resigns.

AILU state committee member Sarampally Madhusudan Reddy, ILPA state committee member Jannu Padma, district leader Pendyala Anil, Hanamkonda Bar Association vice-president Raghupathi, IAL state general secretary Bheemanatham Srinivas and several other lawyers participated in the protest.
