KITS Warangal Observes National Librarians’ Day

Tributes paid to Dr. S. R. Ranganathan on his 134th birth anniversary
Warangal, August 12: The Central Library of Kakatiya Institute of Technology and Science (KITSW), Warangal, observed National Librarians’ Day on August 12 to mark the 134th birth anniversary of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, known as the Father of Library Science in India.
Principal Prof. K. Ashoka Reddy said that the day was observed to remember Dr. Ranganathan’s contribution to the development of library science and the library movement in the country. Floral tributes were paid to his portrait on the occasion.
KITSW Registrar Prof. M. Komal Reddy, Library Committee Chairperson and Dean R&D Prof. B. Ramadevi, and Librarian Dr. K. Indrasena Reddy spoke about the contribution of Dr. Ranganathan and the changing role of libraries.
The speakers said that Dr. Ranganathan played an important role in developing libraries in India as organised and user-oriented centres of knowledge. His Five Laws of Library Science, published in 1931, continue to guide library professionals. The laws—“Books are for Use,” “Every Reader His or Her Book,” “Every Book Its Reader,” “Save the Time of the Reader,” and “Library is a Growing Organism”—remain relevant in the digital era.
They also recalled his work in Colon Classification, library organisation, cataloguing, documentation and library education, which contributed to the development of library science as a profession in India.
Prof. B. Ramadevi said libraries have changed with the growth of e-books, e-journals, digital repositories, online databases, open-access resources and Artificial Intelligence. Libraries should now support teaching, learning, research and innovation along with providing access to books and other resources.
Librarian Dr. K. Indrasena Reddy said the role of librarians has also expanded. Modern librarians work as knowledge facilitators, research support professionals and guides who help users find reliable and relevant information.
The speakers stressed the need to strengthen library services at KITSW according to the academic and research requirements of students, faculty and researchers. They called for greater access to print and electronic resources, stronger digital library services, research support, reading habits among students and effective use of new technologies.
Faculty members Prof. M. Veera Reddy, Dr. H. Ramesh Babu, Dr. K. Shivashankar and Dr. V. Chandrashekhar Rao, Assistant Administrative Officer S. Satish, library staff members Dr. Niranjan, Dr. Arun Kumar, Sumalatha and T. Raju, Library Committee members, College Public Relations Officer Dr. D. Prabhakara Chary and a large number of students attended the programme.
